Working with files
How to attach a file to a question, which formats and sizes the chat accepts, and what happens with scans.
You can attach a document, spreadsheet, image, scan, or voice recording to a question; the chat will read the file and answer based on it. Attach a file with the paper clip next to the input field or by dragging it anywhere into the window. Several files can be attached to one question.
Formats and sizes
| Type | Formats | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Images | PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF | up to 8 MB |
| Documents | PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX | about 10 MB |
| Scans (PDF without text) | about 7 MB | |
| Text and data | TXT, MD, CSV, JSON | about 10 MB |
| Code and configuration | PY, JS, TS, GO, HTML, CSS, SQL, YAML, XML, and other text formats | about 10 MB |
| Voice recordings | MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, OPUS, WEBM, FLAC, AAC | about 10 MB |
Things to keep in mind
- Scans and photos of documents are recognized automatically, but this takes longer than regular reading.
- The old DOC, XLS, and PPT formats are not read: the chat will say right away "the old .doc format is not supported, save it again as .docx".
- Attached files stay in the conversation, and you can ask about them later.
- Images are scaled down to 2048 pixels on the longer side before sending.
- The chat receives voice recordings as a transcript. See Voice input.
If a file was not read
If a file could not be read, the line "File not read: 'name', reason" appears in the answer. Check the file's format and size against the table above.
