How conversations and message input work, and what the chat can do while answering.

This page covers what you use in the chat every day: how to keep conversations and search through them, how input works, and what the chat does while answering, such as searching the web, opening pages, drawing, and calculating. Files, voice input, and model choice each have their own page.

Conversations

  • New conversation. The "New conversation" button is at the top of the sidebar. The conversation gets its name automatically after the first question.
  • Search. The "Search conversations" field searches by words across all your conversations and accounts for word forms. Clicking a result opens the conversation at the matching message.
  • Pinning, renaming, and deleting. All three actions are in the "…" menu next to a conversation in the sidebar.
  • Marks in the list. A blue dot means something new has appeared in the conversation; a wave means an answer is being written there right now.
  • Several answers at once. While the chat is answering in one conversation, you can switch to another and ask there; the answer will not be interrupted. Up to three answers run at the same time.
  • Stopping an answer. The square button that replaces the send button stops the answer.

The answer will not be lost if you close the tab. The chat will finish writing it, and it will be waiting in the conversation.

Message input

  • Sending. Enter sends the message, Shift+Enter starts a new line.
  • Compressing long conversations. The chat compresses long conversations on its own: the older part is replaced with a summary, and a "history compressed" line appears in the feed. The whole conversation stays on screen. The circle next to the input field shows how much is left before compression; hover over it to see the percentage.
  • Attachments. Attach a file with the paper clip next to the input field or by dragging it anywhere into the window. See Working with files.
  • Voice. Use the microphone button to dictate a question. See Voice input.

What the chat does while answering

The chat decides on its own which of the following it needs for the answer. While it is working, a line under the text shows what it is doing, for example "Searched the web: …". The line stays in the answer even after the page is reloaded.

  • Web search. Up to two searches per answer. A "Sources" block with links appears under the answer.
  • Reading pages. Give a link, and the chat will open the page and answer based on it.
  • Images. Ask the chat to draw an image. With your next request you can edit the drawn image or a photo you attached, for example "add a dog". The "Download" button is under the image. One image per answer. The chat does not draw well-known characters, trademarks, or real people.
  • Charts. The chat builds charts from the data in the conversation.
  • Files. The chat can return a ready-made document, spreadsheet, or code as a downloadable file.
  • Exact arithmetic. The chat does its math with a calculator.
  • Exchange rates. The chat uses today's Bank of Russia exchange rates.
  • Clarifying question. If the choice is yours, the chat asks with a card of options. You can pick an option or type your own answer.

If a search or page opening fails, the chat answers with what it managed to gather and leaves a line about it in the answer. See Limits and errors.
