Kimi K2 Thinking or a model without reasoning: to show the thought process or not
This article used to compare two sibling Moonshot models, Kimi K2 Thinking (kimi-k2-thinking) and the regular Kimi K2. The regular K2 is no longer in the catalog, but the question remains the same: take a model that reasons before answering, or one that answers directly. The choice affects both quality and the bill.
The difference in one sentence
K2 Thinking builds a chain of reasoning before answering. A model without reasoning, for example Mistral Small 3.2 (mistral-small-3.2) or Llama 4 Maverick (llama-4-maverick), answers directly.
Thinking is not always better: reasoning costs tokens and time, and on simple tasks it is pure overpayment with no gain in quality.
When to take Thinking
- Multi-step math and logic where the solution path matters.
- Complex analysis where several conditions must be reconciled without losing any of them.
- Tasks where you want to see why the model reached its conclusion, for audit or debugging.
When a model without reasoning is enough
- Writing and rewriting text, summarization.
- Dialogue where response speed matters.
- Data extraction, formatting, simple answers.
Measure it yourself
Do not trust comparative benchmarks blindly. Run both on your own real requests:
from openai import OpenAIclient = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.yenisei.ru/v1", api_key="YENISEI_KEY")for model in ["mistral-small-3.2", "kimi-k2-thinking"]: r = client.chat.completions.create( model=model, messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Your typical complex request"}], ) print(model, "->", r.usage.completion_tokens, "tokens")If Thinking gives the same answer but costs three times as many tokens, the conclusion is obvious. If accuracy on your tasks rises noticeably, the extra cost is justified. This is settled by measurement, not by argument.
Russian language
Kimi K2 Thinking sometimes "thinks" in English inside its chain, but it delivers the final answer in Russian correctly, and quality is not affected. If you want a newer Moonshot model with reasoning and image input, look at Kimi K2.6 (kimi-k2.6).
