GLM 5.3 and GLM 4.7 Flash: when you need brains and when you need speed
Two Z.AI models for agents and reasoning. One reasons more thoroughly, the other answers faster. The choice depends on who is waiting for the answer: a person or a program.

GLM 5.3 and GLM 4.7 Flash: when you need brains and when you need speed
This article used to compare GLM 4.6 and GLM 4.7 Flash. GLM 4.6 is no longer in the catalog; the "thinking" role in the Z.AI lineup is now played by GLM 5.3 (glm-5.3). GLM 4.7 Flash (glm-4.7-flash) stays. The main point of the old comparison still holds: Flash is a separate branch built for speed, not a newer model that is better at everything.
What the difference really is
GLM 5.3 reasons more thoroughly. It takes its time, lays out intermediate steps, and makes fewer mistakes on multi-step tasks. In an agent where a chain of a dozen tool calls can be broken by a single error at step three, this pays off.
GLM 4.7 Flash has lower latency. The first token arrives sooner and generation is denser. It reasons too, but less by default. It fits where a user is staring at the cursor waiting for an answer.
A simple rule of thumb
The main question is: who is waiting for the answer, a person or a program?
- A person in an interactive chat, autocomplete, a live assistant: 4.7 Flash. Half a second of delay is noticeable.
- A background agent that runs tools on its own and is in no hurry: GLM 5.3. Here it matters more not to make a mistake than to answer 300 ms faster.
Example: an agent with tools
from openai import OpenAIclient = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.yenisei.ru/v1", api_key="YENISEI_KEY")# background task analysis: use GLM 5.3resp = client.chat.completions.create( model="glm-5.3", messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Plan a database migration in 3 steps and call the tools."}], tools=tools,)Russian language and price
Flash is noticeably cheaper, which makes sense for the "fast" branch. If you need speed but with a bit more headroom, there is also GLM 5.3 Flash (glm-5.3-flash), which also understands images. If you push a large volume of short answers, the difference on the monthly bill adds up.
Keep it simple: connect both under one key and route requests by task type. It takes about five minutes and the savings are real.
