DeepSeek V4 Flash: when you need fast and cheap inference

The smaller V4 responds quickly and costs several times less than the flagship. Here are the scenarios where Flash beats Pro on more than just price.

DeepSeek V4 Flash: when you need fast and cheap inference

Not every task needs a flagship. Half of real-world LLM calls are short, predictable operations: label a message, pull fields out of a text, rephrase a paragraph. Running an expensive model on them is like delivering pizza by truck.

For these scenarios we added DeepSeek V4 Flash.

The numbers

  • The price is several times lower than V4 Pro; current figures are on the plans and pricing page;
  • context up to a million tokens;
  • low latency: the first token arrives quickly, which matters when a person is waiting for an answer on screen.

Latency matters more than price here: in a chatbot or autocomplete, users feel the difference between 400 ms and 2 seconds to the first character far more than the difference in quality on a simple request.

Where Flash really fits

1. Classification and routing. Determine the topic of a ticket, its tone, language, priority. No reasoning needed, just a stable short answer.

2. Structure extraction. Pull a name, amount, and date out of an email and return JSON.

from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://api.yenisei.ru/v1",
api_key="YENISEI_KEY",
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="deepseek-flash",
messages=[
{"role": "system", "content": "Return JSON with the fields name, amount, date."},
{"role": "user", "content": "John transferred 4500 rubles on July 3."},
],
response_format={"type": "json_object"},
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

3. The first tier in a cascade. Flash answers 80% of simple requests and forwards the hard ones to V4 Pro. The average cost per request drops several times over, while quality on hard requests doesn't suffer.

Where Flash will let you down

Don't expect multi-step reasoning from it. Tasks like "compare three approaches and justify the choice" or "find the subtle logical error in this proof" are not for it. On those, Flash skips steps: the answer looks confident, but on inspection the reasoning has holes. If you need not just the answer but an explanation of why it is what it is, use Pro.

Russian

In Russian, Flash holds up well for its class: short answers and rephrasings are clean. On long generations it sometimes simplifies the wording, but for the tasks it was built for, there are no long generations.

Make Flash the default for high-volume operations where throughput and speed matter, and call the flagship selectively.
